It`s a Great Feeling Photos
It's always a treat watching a movie for the first time and finding it to be a very enjoyable film. It's A Great Feeling is that type of movie. It's one of Doris Day's earlier movies, but it's also one of her best. She plays Judy Adams, who works in the Warner Bros commissary waiting for her big break. Judy hails from Gurkey's Corners, Wisconsin and is ready to become a star. At the studio, actor Jack Carson, who plays himself in a hilarious piece of meta acting, finds out no director or leading lady will work with him. So he decides to direct a picture himself with his good old buddy Dennis Morgan, also playing himself. But Morgan realizes Carson can't be trusted and decides not to do the picture. Well that places Jack in a tough situation because he has over extended himself on homes and cars. Jack finally convinces Dennis to work with him, so now they only need to find a leading lady. But no woman won't even go near Jack. In comes Judy, and the duo decides to make her a star. Of course they have to convince the producer of the film to sign off on her and that makes for some outrageous situations. It's a running gag that every time Judy appears before him, she twinkles her eyes really fast and the quirky music in the background plays really fast. The trio work great together and play off one another easy as pie. Carson as a field day playing himself. And Morgan is pretty good too. Day is a hoot in this early comedic role. But she also gets to belt out a couple of songs. And let's not forget all the amazing cameos by real life movie stars of the day like Danny Kaye, Jane Wyman, Edward G. Robinson, Patricia O'Neal, Gary Cooper, Ronald Reagan, Eleanor Parker and even top directors like King Vidor, Michael Curtiz, and Raoul Walsh. The best cameos are by Joan Crawford and Edward G. Robinson. They're a riot. Joan does a nice send up of her own image as she goes off on Carson and slaps him. He asks why did you do that, and Joan replies I do that in all my pictures and walks away. Hilarious. And another gag that is truly funny is that no one believes that the town of Gurkey's Corners exist. The bit at the train station when Judy tries to get a train home is inspired lunacy at it's best. It will remind you of a classic Marx Brothers routine. It's A Great Feeling is a wonderful musical comedy that manages to have audiences laugh with Hollywood, instead of laughing at it.

Wonderful review Monty, It's a Great Feeling(1949) is one of my favorite movies. It really looks like the stars/cameos, are having a lot of fun. Jack Carson is very funny. Doris Day,she's so young and beautiful. If you are a Doris Day fan, this is a "Gotta See" movie :)

I loved Joan Crawford cameo and when says her short speech to Jack Carson before slapping his face. The same speach she gives to 'Ann Blythe' in Mildred Pierce before slapping her face.
Oh yeah...and either Jack or Dennis ask why did you do that and she says I do that in all my pictures.
I think Doris Day and Jack Carson did 3 movies together..
Edward G Robinson had a funny cameo too. And Ronald Reagan. Pretty much everyone had a good bit.
It was fun to see Doris Day as a brunette, french girl
for me the cameos were one of my favorite scenes in the film.
They were..it was cool because you kept guessing who is gonna pop up next? Jane Wyman passing out and then waken by her daughter was great.
my favorite line in the movie was when Jack said "He is so off key he needs a compass to get back"
The sparring between Jack and Dennis was good too, with poor old Doris caught in the middle.

I loved the gag when she would twinkle her eyes and they play that quirky music.
i thought doris day's best scene in the film, is when she is playing his real life pregnant wife. to get dennis to sign the contract.
yes.. i almost thought nuts and bolts were gonna come out of her head.:)
And you know it was great that everyone had a good time making this movie...and it didn't make fun of Hollywood, it just showed that we could laugh along with all the stars too.
i also enjoyed the scenes where they constantly put judy where trent can see her every where he goes. then he starts to think he is going crazy.

Oh yes that was quite funny. And the poor man at the train station dealing with information on Gurkey's Corners had me laughing out loud.

Hey I was just checking out your new change on esther Williams page. Looks fantastic. I left a comment that if you needed me to contribute some stuff I am more than ready to do so. I'm not too knowledgeable on Esther but I have seen a few of her films and loved them. Just grant me a learning curve and I should do ok.
what did you think of jack's singing voice?
It through me for a second when he got up there to show Doris how it's suppose to be done and I couldn't help but laugh. especially when they showed the footage to the producer with Jack's voice dubbed in when Doris was singing. Too funny.

Glass Bottom Boat is one of Doris films I haven't seen. But once I saw it was coming on TCM next month, I knew I would have an opportunity to see it.

Which brings me to an interesting question you could ask in a poll on here. What decade do you most like of Doris Day films: the 40's, 50's, or 60's. What do you think? I'm gonna have to think about it for awhile because honestly I don't know.
I mean the 50's were her most prolific but the 60's produced a lot of classic comedies. She only did a few films in the 40's but it's still a tough call to make.

And back to It's A Great Feeling, it was great seeing Jack Carson in a lead role. I truly believe he was very underrated as an actor. I thought he was very talented in all kinds of genres: comedy, drama, western, action.
And you won't believe it but we just hit our 60th comment for our discussion. Time goes by so fast when you talk about something you and someone else agree on.
i agree, jack was an awesome actor.. i think my favorite film of his was Mildred Pierce.
That's right he was in that film. Good choice. I thought he gave one of his best performances in Cat on a Hot Tin roof, but kinda got overshadowed by Taylor and Newman.

And this is going back to one of his earlier roles...as a would be suitor for either Lucille Ball or Eve Arden in Stage Door. Do you remember his part in that? It's been awhile since I seen it..I think he was dating Lucille and Eve asked did he have a friend or I may have the two confused. Anwyay he was pretty good in that early role.

Oh you gotta see Stage Door sometime. The cast is simply one for the ages: Katherine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, Lucille Ball, Adolphe Menjou, Eve Arden, and Jack Carson. Simply fabulous. I vaguely remember Phffft with Jack Lemmon right? And I have seen Dangerous When Wet.
sounds like a really good movie.. i'm a fan of everyone in the cast. i do not know how it got past me..yes, Pffft is with jack lemmon..
Speaking of co-stars, I just saw Dennis Morgan the other night in Christmas in Connecticut with Barbara Stanwyck. Love that movie. There is something about Stanwyck that makes her a favorite of mine. I plan to do my top 20 actresses next month and you will see where my faves rank. I recently did one for the men. Have you ever ranked your favorites?
I like barbara stanwyck too. no, i have not pu together a list..but gene tierney might be one of my all time favorites..
