A Weekly Discussion

Hey Dawn,

Just wondering if you would be interested in starting a weekly discussion about Doris Day? We could pick one movie per week if everyone has seen it and discuss it for about an hour or so on a specific day? Or any topic related to Doris: her singing, her TV show, etc. I'm game if you are. I think it would be cool. Just let me know what you think? And if so, you should pic the first topic or movie since you created her page. I think Doris is all for it, as her pic shows her enthusiam.

That's a great choice Dawn but to be honest I haven't seen Pillow Talk in about 10 years, so it's not real clear in my mind. I just saw Please Don't Eat The Daisies so that would work. I may have an old VHS copy of Talk out in my shed. I have to go look through my stuff and if I do I can watch it this weekend. Let me see first and I will let you know tomorrow.

It was bugging me so I went to look for my copy of Pillow Talk. And the first box I came across it was the first movie staring at me. Must have been destiny. I will try to watch it tomorrow. Just need to settle on a day for the discussion. Whatever time that would work for either of us and anyone else.

i just read where Rock Hudson turned down the role 3 times. he thought it was to risky.

I didn't know that...but it was strange how they played on his alter ego Rex as maybe being a fancy boy who like recipes and dressing nice. Not that anyone knew what would eventually come out later on in his life.

i thought that doris day and Rock Hudson were a perfect match in this film.

i did not like jonathan at all.

Yeah they were pretty good....and I agree I didn't care too much for Jonathan. But if it makes you feel any better..I read that during the scene where he and Jan stops at a diner because she can't stop crying and the patrons take offense because they think he's knocked her up and won't marry her, the guy that punches Jonathan accidentally hit him for real on the first take and they kept it in the movie..so when Tony Randall slides down underneath the table, he's out for real. I thought that was an interesting behind the scenes story.

BTW, if you could drop Move Over Darling on my top 10 Day movies and add It's A Great Feeling. I just saw that the other night and it was awesome.

they made a sling for Rock to carry Doris in. as his arm was getting tired in the scene at the end where he carries her across town.

Dawn said...

Do you have any ideas for the doris day page?

monty said...

I love all the facial expressions Doris made in this movie. She excels in this department. Not too many actresses can pull it off but Doris can. Her back and forth conversations with Rock in this one were great.

Dawn said...

that was an interesting behind the scenes story.

Dawn said...

I think Doris is very talented. i think one of my favorite scenes is when she listening to rock sing the same love song to his many girlfriends over the phone.

and the researcher is a single young woman who waives her complaint..

Dawn said...

OK.. Do you have a weekly poll question in mind?

Dawn said...

can you imagine a gift of a convertable?Wow!! that would be awesome.

monty said...

Well, one could be name a favorite actor or actress who you would have like to have seen paired with Doris. My personal choices include William Holden, Tony Curtis, and Deborah Kerr.

monty said...

Convertible would be nice..which brings up another good scene where Doris has to deal with Tony who was being very aggressive with her.

monty said...

And Thelma Ritter is awesome as Alma..but then again Thelma is great in everything she did.

Dawn said...

those are all good choices..What do you think of Frank Sinatra or Gene kelly?

monty said...

Oh I did have a question for you about Doris. Some sites list 1922 as her birth year and some say 1924. Do you know which one is right?

monty said...

Oh yeah Frank and Gene would be cool too.

Dawn said...

Tony is to aggressive..
Thelma Ritter, I agree.. is wonderful in everyting she did. she was wonderful playing Alma the drunkard maid.

Dawn said...

No.. i do not know which birthday is right.. i will look into it more.

monty said...

OK about the birthday. If I had one issue with Pillow Talk, it would be the hairstyle Doris has in it. It seems a little off. Not right, you know what I mean. But then the following year she did Please Don't Eat The Daisies...it's perfect. But that's a minor flaw in Pillow Talk. I can look past that and still enjoy it.

i thought Rock did a wonderful job when he came up with a new identity as Rex STetson.

Dawn said...

yes, her hairsyle was a little to old for her in this film. i think the part of the film i did not care for is when, the Dr. and his nurse thought he was going to have a baby. a little to over the top for me.

monty said...

Yeah that was a little out there about Rock and the baby. But I did like the ending where it came back and said 3 months later. Not too many films did that back then. I thought that was pretty cool.

Dawn said...

loved the new apartment, animal prints and hanging beads. Can you imagine coming home to that mess?:)

Dawn said...

that is true..you know that they had 4 children .

monty said...

I didn't know that. What did you think of the title song Doris sang? I thought it was one of her very best.

Dawn said...

what movie would you like to pick for next weeks Doris Day discussion?

Dawn said...

i think the title song is one of her best songs. She has a beautiful voice.

Dawn said...

If you count the pillows. there are two blue pillows and two pink pillows. That is what i thought they were trying to say..

monty said...

And watching Pillow Talk for the first time in years, I noticed that the guy who played Major Bellows on I dream of Jeannie was the phone person Doris went to complain about Rock to.

Dawn said...

oh.. yes, i remember him..he was also funny.

Dawn said...

i hope they never make a sequel to this film.

monty said...

I was surprised Doris and Rock didn't make more movies together. They made a great team. I love the scene where after Rex takes her home and then calls her to set up another date, Rock cuts in as Brad on the other line and he's cracking up at poor Doris's expense. I couldn't help but laugh out loud at that scene.

Dawn said...

i know.. I'm surprised too. the three movies that they did together are my favorite Rock Hudson movies. Yes,that scene when they are talking on the phone was awesome..Rock was wonderful playing Rex.

Cool talk to ya later.
