In New York, Doug searches everywhere for a new singer and is about to give up when he hears Martha Gibson, a turntable operator with a wonderful voice. Martha loses her job singing for Doug. They pass each other on the street and she misses him when he comes to the station to offer her a job. They finally meet and head off for California. Martha, a war widow, leaves her young son behind with her uncle Charlie.

In Los Angeles, Martha auditions for Hofer, but things don't go well. Gary is attracted to her and invites her to lunch. Doug, not ready to give up. Talks Vivian Martin, Hutchins' secretary to share her apartment with Martha while he tries to find her a job. Martha finds a job at a nightclub, but conditions are so bad that she quits.

Later, when Doug hears Martha singing to Freddie, he realizes that her strength is ballads, not jazz. Doug sells Vivian's sports car to get the money for Martha to audition on the radio.
Unfortunately, Hofer misses Martha's amazing performance.

Later, Gary arranges for Martha to attend a party where she can perform for potential clients. But Gary and Doug get into fight, and Martha loses another opportunity.

One night, Gary misses his performance, and Martha fills in for him. Hofer loves her singing and fires Gary. Martha has fallen in love with Gary and goes to find him, but he has disappeared, no where to be found..

A short time later.. after reading a bedtime story to Freddie, Doug proposes to Martha, who says "no" because she is still in love with Gary.
